Students

Software Heritage is a non profit initiative with the clearly stated mission to collect, preserve and share the source code of all software ever written. We know that this mission will appeal to many students that may want to contribute to it, and we look forward to welcome and support their contributions.

We detail here the resources available to support student volunteers.

Internships

Software Heritage periodically takes motivated students that are interested in the project’s mission and mentor them throughout short periods (usually 4 to 6 months) of paid internships.

See the Internships page on our wiki for more information.

Google Summer of Code

Google Summer of Code is a global program focused on bringing more student developers into open source software development. During their Summer break, students work with an open source organization on a 3 month programming project.

Several projects related to Software Heritage have already been proposed starting from the 2019 edition, and new proposals may come up: learn more and watch out for opportunities on the Google Summer of Code website.

Student grants

Small individual grants for students that want to work on some of the core axes of our mission may be available. To apply,  send to studentsupport@softwareheritage.org a mail containing:

  • a description of the work you propose to carry out, explaining how it aligns with Software Heritage’s mission;
  •  a letter of support from your University or research institute.

Applications will be examined on a rolling basis.
